Wedding / Event Cake Serving Guidelines
Choosing the appropriate size for your wedding/ event cake is essential for your special day. It’s important to ensure there is enough cake to accommodate all your guests while minimizing waste. Consider whether you would like to extra cake or an entire tier to take home, freeze, and enjoy later.
The true wedding cake equation comes down to :
How many people you want to serve x how big you want your servings to be = wedding cake size.
For a cocktail-style reception, the industry standard is to have cake for 60-75% of your estimated guest count. For a seated dinner where cake is a served course, the industry standard is to have one slice per guest.
How many people do you want your wedding cake to serve
When planning your wedding cake, it's common for couples to order enough for their immediate guests, but not necessarily for the entire guest list. Typically, wedding cakes are designed to serve a portion of the guests, with additional desserts or sweets filling in the gaps. However, we always recommend discussing your specific needs with us to ensure there's enough cake for everyone. Whether it's for an intimate celebration or a larger gathering, we’ll help you determine the perfect size and design so that everyone can enjoy a slice of your beautiful cake!
It's uncommon for every guest to take a slice, but there may be cake lovers who want to sample all the flavors or go back for seconds. For a cocktail-style reception, the industry standard is to have cake for 60-75% of your estimated guest count. For a seated dinner where cake is a served course, the industry standard is to have one slice per guest. This approach allows those who want cake to have some, while also accommodating those eager guests who might want a little extra.
What size cake servings are you going to offer?
It’s easy to focus solely on your guest count. However, determining the right size of your wedding cake goes beyond just asking, “What do I need for 100 guests?” It ultimately depends on the shape of the cake.
For wedding cakes you should be ordering based upon 'finger' slices because cake is usually served with tea and coffee following a dessert course. However if you will be using the cake as your dessert you should allow for a 'dessert serve'
A "dessert" cake serving size is typically considered to be a slice about 1 inch wide at its widest point for a 2-layer cake, which is roughly the width of a thumb or about three fingers side by side for more casual reference.
A "standard" event size serving, aiming to stretch the cake to more guests, could be narrower, approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide at its widest point, which would be about two fingers wide.
** PLEASE NOTE**
Eva Christine’s Sweets standard cake tiers are constructed as four (4) layer tiers unless otherwise agreed in writing.
Our cakes are approximately 10 plus inches in overall height per tier, consisting of:
• Four (4) cake layers, each approximately 2 inches in height • Buttercream filling layers between each cake layer measuring approximately 1–1.5 inches
Due to this construction method, tiers are taller and structurally denser than traditional 4-inch bakery tiers.
Industry-standard wedding servings are calculated using portions measuring approximately 1” x 2” x 4”.
For planning and serving reference purposes, standard wedding cake serving charts are typically based on a 4-inch tier height (single-layer count tier). To keep calculations consistent and simplified, serving estimates provided by Vendor are based on the equivalent of a 4-inch tier height count model.
Standard wedding slice
[ This is how our serving guide is determined]
1 inch x 1 inch x 4-5 inches
Dessert Portion
[ Larger slice = less servings]
1 inch wide x 2 inches deep x 4-5 inches tall.

This will give you an idea of the cake size you need. There's no need to do the calculations yourself; when reach out to me about a wedding cake, I'll take care of all the math and offer you several options based on your guest count. If you're just looking for a rough estimate, this chart will be helpful. Additionally, I've examples of various wedding cake sizes to demonstrate the potential number of servings.
